Help my gun don’t shoot!
We have had people bring in all makes and models of firearms with all kinds of problems from not firing, not extracting, not ejecting, not feeding, and even pump guns that won’t pump. 75% of these guns have the same problem -
“ Dirt “. Over oiled, gummed up mess from things like wd40, Rem oil and others that build up coat after coat with powder, pine needles and other crud that stops bolts from closing, slides from moving and gas pistons to freeze in place, and yes, we have had pumps that you couldn’t pump and gas pistons that we have had to drive out, extractors that won’t move and firing pins stuck in place.
It seems that a lot of the people in the hunting world think that cleaning their gun means spraying it down with wd40 wiping off what is running down the stock and standing it in the corner.
This is fine from day to day during the hunting season,, (all but the wd40), but when it’s time to put the old iron away until next year, you should remove the trigger group , fore end and gas piston on semi auto’s and give them a good cleaning and light oiling. Light oiling does not mean dumping a can of 10w30 over the gun. Use a good self cleaning gun oil (one that cleans it’s self off when you put on the next coat) water displacing oil. We use Kwikseal in the shop; it’s the oil that comes on a lot of new guns when you take them out of the box.One last
word on cleaning,If you are going to use things like auto brake cleaner keep it away from painted trigger groups, camo guns and your stock it can remove the finish on these parts.
Then there are the people that think the only thing
that needs oil is the old John Deer sitting out back.
Check out the pictures of some of the guns we are bluing to see what happens to these guns,,,,nice.
